GROWTH BY ANDY LUCAS
In a world of mass produced depersonalized items, I maintain true originality in my artwork by creating each work only once. The term I like to use is a "once made". This is my own word for anything only made once. Not only does this practice maintain my creative mental health, it allows the wearer/buyer to have confidence that they truly have something that no one else has. Each piece of art grows off the lessons learned in the prior and a continual cycle of growth is nurtured. My jewelry art is inspired by the gems themselves mostly; the natural shapes of gem crystals as well as those altered or faceted by man. The geometry of nature is another major influence in my work. The intersection and interaction of multiple planes and lines of these geometries has been my major area of exploration. When I create a piece of jewelry I feel that I am creating a home for the stone(s) I am working with. In this way I feel that I am paying homage or respect to the stone which has been removed from its point of origin on the earth. It is my belief that each piece I create is for a specific individual or purpose from the time it is conceived in my mind. For me the main goal when working is to design a creation and then to execute it as precisely as my mind had imagined. In the rare case that the finished creation looks exactly how I had envisioned it from the start, this is when I feel most accomplished and ultimately satisfied as an artist.
Jewelry as an art media is very exposed. When worn (if visible), a piece of jewelry is being shared with everyone the wearer comes in contact with. It is very exciting to me to create art that does not "stagnate" in one place, but is able to move about, creating its own day to day story with its owner. I am creating a vessel for a stone; a vessel that allows it to be worn. Once a stone can be worn there are seemingly endless possibilities for its future. Where will this vessel go? Who will gift it to who? Who will lose it? Who will hide it? Who will find it? Who will steal it? When and where will it be destroyed?(nothing is forever) These are all ideas that intrigue me. Enjoy the art! Wear it out!
